From gearbox inspection to sea-trails in Shanghai
Project description
Container vessel "MV Sinotrans Tokyo" was anchored at the port of Shanghai. It suffered from a major failure of the propulsion gearbox, located in the drive train of the vessel. The main concern of our customer - InterOrient Navigation Co. Ltd. - was getting the equipment back into service as quickly as possible.
InterOrient invited Stork Gears & Services to carry out visual inspections on board of the vessel. Inspections revealed that two teeth of the pinion had been broken out and the active flanks showed a repeated damage pattern. After inspection, the gearbox components were transported by freight plane to our workshop in Rotterdam. We manufactured a new pinion shaft, regrinded the bull gear and re-metalled all radial bearings. We also performed an investigation in order to establish the cause of failure of the pinion wheel. Chemical and mechanical analysis of the broken parts of the pinion shaft took place. Both gears of the pump drive showed scoring damage, probably caused by metal-to-metal contact and alignment errors. Our customer appreciated our fast delivery time and extensive gearbox and material knowhow.
Scope of work
- Full inspection of the gearbox and reporting
