Challenge
The Client needed to replace all the 6.6KV cables of four low pressure gas compressors motors due to continuous cable failures.
The distance the cables ran around the plant meant significant manpower and scaffolding materials would be required for the year-long project duration. This was recognized as a costly and time-consuming approach, which would have resulted in major obstructions to the plant.
Solution
Stork’s UAE and UK teams collaborated to deliver the project utilizing rope access techniques. A detailed methodology was developed and Stork’s Knowledge Transfer & Innovation team communicated the benefits associated with this approach to the Client.
The Client agreed to test this method of cable replacement using the first motor as a pilot case. A safety and technical analysis, including a safety demonstration (see image left), was carried out and the project was completed successfully and without incident.
Following the pilot, the team would return and remove the old cables and install the cables for the next compressor until the scope of work was completed.
Client benefits
Cost reduction
Utilizing rope access instead of scaffolding significantly reduced the project cost, duration and manpower requirements, while freeing up premium deck space
Safety improvement
The rope access solution is a prime example of Stork’s commitment to providing outstanding service to Clients, with a focus on reducing risk, assuring safety and implementing value-add solutions
“We thank the Stork and ZADCO teams for their great efforts to assist us in achieving this great milestone, and completing the work in safe and timely manner. This is the first time we have laid KV cable using rope access, and so far, it gives us a very good indication and assurance that we are on the right track to success, inshallah.”
